I absolutely love this type of stuff – no not Sunsilk – conversion rate optimisation tactics. Bryan Eisenberg, author of Call to Action a CRO bible has his finger right on the pulse and his article about how to get the best from a commercial or corporate photographer is very useful.

The critical point to remember is not that the model should always be pretty or good looking as a given but that they should be looking at the content you want the user to engage with.

Simple stuff isn’t it but combined with other insider CRO tricks your conversion rate can go through the roof.

Genius or just plain obvious?

Again though it begs the questions should we all just follow these conventions and have web pages that all look the same or perhaps just agree that for certain sites like news delivery this works and for others like a gimmicky FMCG brand with a load of interactivity it perhaps doesn’t.

There's lots of free web site offers around but does free mean? Real value for money is measured in the return so proper planning is essential and has a cost.

Sorry to anyone that offers this service but this just has to be said.

If you can’t afford a web site then fair enough, a free web site with a low cost monthly fee is something worth considering but ONLY if your web site is not important to your business. If it is then reconsider your approach as a poorly planned web site could be just enough to kill you off.

Let me tell you a story that might help to illustrate the absolute madness behind these free web site offers.

Imagine you see a sign outside a builders firm that says ‘free extensions’.

You were looking to get a new bedroom and a kitchen below so decide to check it out. You walk in and ask the builder for details. He sits you down and begins to explain his offer.

“We’ll build you an extension tomorrow. Just leave the house and it will be ready when you get home from work”.

Thats it. He says nothing more except “what colour bricks do you like” and “give me your address and make sure the kids are out!”.

What do you do now, Sign up for the deal?

No you wouldn’t and you’d be right not too. This lunatic could turn up, knock your living room wall down and build a concrete garage on the side for all you know. Well, your free web site is pretty much the same.

“Supply us a logo and a few pages of content and it will be ready in a few days” is the usual patter.

If you take this approach you will end up with a web site that is out of sync with your brand, is poorly structured for when your users actually find you via a search engine (if they ever do), is invisible on the search engines and likely to be badly coded.

So really, ask yourself before you go ahead and book your free web site “Do I want to take my business forward on-line with a worthwhile web site that will generate quality enquiries or do I want a token web presence because I’d like to have a www. on my business card?”.

For more information on how to create an effective web presence check out Brooks Digital Marketing, web design Derby
